Global ranking of students released by US

The US department of Education has released a report that shows where the US students stand in Math and Science when compared to their peers in the world.

There are 3 different assessment tests:
  1. Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS)
  2. Program for International Student Assessment (PISA)
  3. Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS)
Countries can voluntarily pariticipate in these assessments tests. For some reason, India did not participate in this.

Here are some results:

  1. In 4th grade math, US stood 8th out of 35 participating countries.
  2. In 8th grade math, US stood 4th out of 47 participating countries.
  3. In 9th grade math, US stood 23rd out of 29 participating countries.
  4. In 4th grade science, US was 4th out of 35.
  5. In 8th grade science, US was 9th out of 47.
  6. In 9th grade science, US was 16th out of 29.
While the 9th grade results are poor, the surprising thing is that countries with less resources than US (such as Kazakshtan, Latvia, Slovenia) performed better.

For parents and teachers who are interested in knowing where their student stands, they can use this web guide to find assessment tests from across the world to benchmark their student.
