Save Your Real-Time Search Results Too!

We are pleased to announce a new feature on the mashedge website - saving real-time results from the web into your guide.

One of the challenges of building a good web guide is to find the appropriate, current, fresh results on the topic of your web guide. We have now integrated the APIs from OneRiot into our website. With this it becomes easy for web guide authors to find real-time relevant and fresh results for the web guide. And with the click of a button, the link can be saved into the web guide.

Check it out and do let us know what you think.

Nobel Prize winner Ramakrishnan benefits from global education materials

I was watching a TV interview with Nobel Laureate Ramakrishnan on NDTV news channel in India today (Oct 8 2009). He credited his undergrad university and teachers in Baroda, India. And it was not an IIT!

But what struck me was that he said he was very happy with his undergrad Physics teacher, who extended his physics curriculum with materials from UC Berkeley. The point to note is that students can benefit from education materials from across the world.

Sharing education materials has become much easier today, thanks to the internet. Today, immense volumes of high-quality education materials are being dumped on the internet. However, figuring out what would be useful for you is a challenge. To this end, Mashedge is playing a key role.

For example, we have collected top-notch Math and Physics materials from across the world to help students in classes 11 and 12.

So, students and teachers, make one yourself in your favorite topic, or check out these web guides.

Math for Class 11 and 12

Physics for Class 11 and 12

Making a web guide is easy. All that you need to do is to collect links on your topic and organize them into chapters. It will take some time, but it will help your students immensely.

Global ranking of students released by US

The US department of Education has released a report that shows where the US students stand in Math and Science when compared to their peers in the world.

There are 3 different assessment tests:
  1. Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS)
  2. Program for International Student Assessment (PISA)
  3. Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS)
Countries can voluntarily pariticipate in these assessments tests. For some reason, India did not participate in this.

Here are some results:

  1. In 4th grade math, US stood 8th out of 35 participating countries.
  2. In 8th grade math, US stood 4th out of 47 participating countries.
  3. In 9th grade math, US stood 23rd out of 29 participating countries.
  4. In 4th grade science, US was 4th out of 35.
  5. In 8th grade science, US was 9th out of 47.
  6. In 9th grade science, US was 16th out of 29.
While the 9th grade results are poor, the surprising thing is that countries with less resources than US (such as Kazakshtan, Latvia, Slovenia) performed better.

For parents and teachers who are interested in knowing where their student stands, they can use this web guide to find assessment tests from across the world to benchmark their student.

K-12 Student Assessment Tests and Exam Papers

We have linked in only the assessments tests in English and to those that are available to the public for free.

Review of Chris Anderson's New Book - "Free"

Chris Anderson's new book "Free: The future of a radical price" is a great read. Who knew that the business around providing Free services would be at least $300 billion a year! I read the complete book for free in 3 days flat.

So how do I repay Chris for his service? I blog and I twitter, which compels more people to read and some to even - yes, that's right - buy! That's the magic of providing a free service. You give your stuff for free and you get a bigger audience and more recognition for free. You may not get $$ right now, but you get something more important - reputation and influence that can yield far more monetary returns later than the immediate sales of a book. That's the message of the book.

Not that Chris needs my help in any way - he is a legend already. The point is that this strategy can help any obscure individual or company with a compelling idea or product to reach huge audiences with little or no cost.

Free is the force that is powering through the web and demolishing everything in its wake. Chris provides reassurance to authors, musicians, and businesses everywhere that are touched by the digital revolution that there is hope. Yes, the market price of anything that can be digitized will go to zero - like it or not. You better build high value services around your free product if you want to stay in business. He provides examples of 50 companies that have done so, and so it is not impossible.

To survive and succeed, one must migrate to "abundance thinking" instead of "scarcity thinking". The internet is making anything that can be digitized abundant. He provides the ten principles of abundance thinking that are crucial to evolving a strategy in your specific area of business. The most important of all is that "Every abundance creates a new scarcity". Discovering what that new scarcity is and migrating there is what will make your business profitable.

As an entrepreneur looking for practical ideas and concrete steps on using this business model, it fell short. Granted, there is no one recipe that fits all. However, a detailed case study of an internet startup that struggled until it discovered a practical way to use the Free business model would have been interesting.

I am sure the business models with Free will evolve over time and there will be more articles on the net. To track these articles in a coherent and shareable form, I have created a Mashedge web guide titled Business Models Based on Free. It's work-in-progress, if you know of any great links to add to the guide, please do let me know.

As an aside, aspiring authors can use Mashedge to collect links to online articles as a web guide in preparation for their book. They can share the web guide with their assistants to help with online research and be more productive.

Disaggregation of Education by Internet Techologies

There was a very interesting conference on the impact of Internet on education. It was organized by Union Square Ventures in New York City. Titled "Hacking Education", it brought together venture capitalists, educators, administrators, publishers and many other leading players in the education market.

There was broad consensus that the internet is enabling substantial changes in the way we learn and teach. It has always been possible to learn outside of a school setting. The ubiquitous connectivity and very low cost of content production and distribution seems to enable the unbundling of key components of education.

David Wiley.jpgDissagregation - David Wiley broke education into these components, 1) content provisioning, 2) research - conducted, archived, and disseminated, 3) help provided to a student with a question on the content, 4) a social life, and 5) issuing credentials.

Historically all of these components were bundled together in the experience of on-site education in a K-12 or University context. Already today, it is possible for a student to get many of these services outside the walls of a traditional educational institution.

Further ....

Fred Wilson of Union Square Ventures is suggesting that the education industry may soon face the same challenges that currently confront the music industry and the newspaper industry. Like those industries, education can be peer produced, delivered as bits, and curated by a community. Like the music and newspaper industries, the cost structures embedded in the education industry's current business models may be very difficult to support in the face of competition from hyper-efficient, web native businesses.

We are already seeing a constant stream of bits of education materials appear on the web.

Mashedge is playing a pioneer role in helping users aggregate these bits of education materials to suit their specific needs. For example:
  1. We have collected the Math curriculum for classes 1-10 based on the Singapore Math curriculum.
  2. We have also aggregated material to help prepare for the Math syllabus for IIT JEE (joint examination material).
If you are a school, university, teacher, or even a student, you can use Mashedge to collect bits of education material and make it useful for you or your students.

Update your resume with your Mashedge web guide

In a previous post, I talked about how Mashedge can be used to capture your web footprint and post it on your resume. This will help your potential employers get a first hand look at your web contributions without requiring them to dig the web in search of you.

Joel Spolsky says in his blog post Get a Job:

" I’ve always hated traditional resumes, which just don’t give the right kind of information about a candidate. If you wanted to hire an iPhone developer, would you rather know that person’s Stack Overflow stats in the iPhone tag and read their answers to technical questions? Or would you rather know where they went to college?"

Dan Schawbel ( the author of Me 2.0) talks about the same thing in Leverage Social Media for Career Success

"Social media tools are becoming mandatory for career success. They are free advertising and give you the ability to connect directly with hiring managers, entrepreneurs and recruiters, instead of applying for jobs through job boards, which are black holes. Your digital assets — blog, podcast, and social networking profiles — are your online identity and how people discover and connect with you. You have the ability to leverage one or all of these social media tools in order to present a positive image and be recruited for a position that aligns with your passion."

Dan mentions the following steps:
  1. Conduct a situational analysis of where you stand in the social media
  2. Unearth your personal brand
  3. Select the right tools for the social media
  4. Build your online empire
  5. Market your brand
  6. Monitor your reputation
I would add one last step: Collect your web footprint and make a Mashedge book.

After all your hard work, it's no use if your intended audience is not able to find all the important things you want them to find about you. While the search engines may be good, you have no control in how they present information about you. Besides, your potential employers will not have enough time to dig through all your contributions.

So help potential employers find out more about you easily. Pick and choose the most important ones and add them to your Mashedge web guide. Then add the link to your resume.

Get Credit for your Web Contributions

It is truly amazing as to the number of dedicated people who contribute to open-source, answer questions on blogs, forums etc. Many people do this outside their jobs on a purely voluntary basis and don't benefit in any way. As a hiring manager at Amazon.com in my past, I have interviewed hundreds of candidates. Many of them stellar, and sometimes we discover that they have been active contributors to the community but there is no mention of it on their resume.

It is easy to see why. It is simply a lack of space to communicate all the bits and pieces of their contributions. The surprising thing is that hiring managers do indeed look for such contributions and indeed, a premium is placed for finding these active candidates.

Now, things are about to change. With Mashedge, candidates can collect all the bits and pieces of their web contributions and organize it as a web book. Then they simply add a link to the Mashedge web book to their resume! Voila. The Mashedge web book allows the hiring managers to dive into the web contributions of the candidate. If the candidate has put in a link to the checkin, they can even see the code! If they answered a question and received hugs, they can see it too. The hiring manager does not have to dig through the web trying to discover their contributions - believe me, they simply don't have the time. They would thank you for helping them do their jobs.

For example, I have put up my web footprint (it is really small) as a web book titled "Kiran Achyutuni" . It is important to name the web book after you so that it shows up in search engine results.

So, I would urge all contributors to open-source, blogs, forums etc to assemble your web footprint as a Mashedge web book, and put it on your resume. That is the easiest way to get credit for your contributions. Who knows, you could get a better offer on your next job. Of course, do let us know if Mashedge has helped you get that better offer.

Here's what you need to do:

  1. Sign up for a Mashedge account if you have not already done so. It's free.
  2. Create a web book titled "your name"
  3. You will be taken to a page to "Organize the web book".
  4. Add links to your web contributions into the book and arrange the links into chapters. You can continue to add links whenever you please.
  5. Make book public and add link to your resume/on-line profile. If you want to keep the book private, you can do so. You can share a private web book with specific people if you wish.
Good luck!

Extremely easy way to build web books

We got a lot of feedback from users on the 'Create a Web Book' feature. We are proud to release the new and improved 'Create a Web Book'. It makes it trivially easy to add links, create chapters, and drag-drop the links into chapters. We were proud to note that a 15-year old user created 3 web books using the new interface. Be sure to check it out. Simply click on the 'Create a Web Book' button. Of course, as always, if you have suggestions for making it better, simply use the feedback form available on every page.

Tell a Friend

We have a new feature to talk about. When you log in, you can tell a friend about any web book via the "Tell a friend" feature. You simply enter the email address of the friend, and we immediately send them an email inviting them to come and read the book. It's that simple.

Collaboration and Organization on the Internet

While Kiran, Rekha and I have been working on Mashedge, my friend Dave Liddell (http://www.ridesouth.net/) was writing a concept paper on the same topic. Its a good read and brings out the essence of Mashedge.

Research Portal Abstract
When you research a topic on the web, you search, you read, you study, you dig deeper into concepts which you don't understand, you learn, you correlate, you evaluate information statistically. Hardly ever do you find an article that answers your exact question in this complicated time we live in and if you do, you don't take it as gospel until your cynicism has been assuaged with corroborating information.

Once you arrive at your personal answer to your question, whether that is how much salt you should intake in a day when sweating on your touring cycle through Central America, what do to do when you get bitten by a scorpion, if Colombia is really safe to travel in, what the best camera is for the price when you are primarily interested in semi-professional grade low-light images, or which foods you should avoid when breast-feeding your child when you suspect his or her rash is food related, you add some opinion based on your facts and you reach a conclusion. Then you act on it. You might tell someone else about it and you might not. Most people don't give feedback to the forums they read, post comments on blogs, have a feedback facility(media articles, etc), or update Wikipedia when they find something that they think is right on or they think is rubbish. This is the problem. There is too much garbage to wade through and everyone hasto do it, over and over again. There is no easy tracking of compound problem solutions.

Wouldn't it be better if you could have a place where topics were researched, the conclusions shared, the garbage tagged as such, and the good stuff labeled prime? You might not always agree with the conclusion, but you could come to an understanding of how they got there, and decide if the evaluations were wrong, they didn't dig deep enough, there's not enough info out there, you personally have the answer, or heaven forbid; you agree with them. In any case, it would shorten your time in research and partially cut out the middle-man,the search portal and all the trash to wade through. Augmentation of"stories" or topics would make them more robust, and rating and evaluation systems would cause consensus to float to the top of thepile. Those who are found to have an analytical nature would also be easily found, not from quantity; as most sites do; but from qualitybased on weighted consensus, based on user research integrity.

Socially, contacts and groupings could be made as a sidebar or story organizational / grouping tool. Why doesn't such a place exist? No one has done it yet. Not all that innovative, just a different way of looking at it.

The Solution: A tool that allows you to easily categorize, refer to, correlate, rate, comment on, and present, information on the internet. This data can then be commented on by the researcher, and in turn any aspect of it can be commented on by others. The research in it's entirety can be rated, disputed, augmented with a different "view" or "overlay" and each overlay or the root (original) research block can be rated and evaluated by the public so that the most logical conclusion is presented and reached. A social intellectual competition which feeds into the social networking aspects.

Mashedge and impact on education

Helping Schools Leverage the power of the Internet!

Mashedge allows schools (teachers and students) to string together pieces of knowledge scattered on the internet as web books. It significantly reduces the information overload for its users by channeling large amounts of information in the familiar format of a book. Teachers organize materials as a web book making it available for class notes and assignments. Web books on a particular topic are arranged into book shelves creating a free virtual library for the school, reusable by the next batch of students.

Mashedge: The Story of Twitter: From Its Blogs

We have made a web book called The Story of Twitter: From its Blogs. This book displays the power of Mashedge in making a meaningful web book from content scattered in the blogs.

This is how we made the book:
  1. First, we created a private web book with a skeletal outline of its table of contents.
  2. We browsed through the blog archives from day 1 and picked articles that were significant and added them to the appropriate chapter.
  3. We created new chapters on the fly as and when we needed them.
  4. We rearranged the chapters into a meaningful order.
  5. We added chapter summary based on the content we added to each chapter.
  6. Finally, we made the book public and made it read-only.
The whole exercise took 3-4 hours and the main overhead was in selecting the articles from the archives. Going forward, maintaining the web book is easy. Whenever you come across new information, simply link it in to the book and you are done.

The reason we made it read-only to the public is to guard the integrity of the web book. We intend to transfer the ownership of the web book to Twitter so that they can maintain it going forward.

Any company, or a blogger out there can do the same thing with their content and make it easy for their users/customers to find information about their products.

Step-by-Step Example: Mashedge for Tutors

Are you a tutor who uses the internet a lot and would like to provide personalized attention to your students? If so, Mashedge can help you.

Mashedge enables users to string together gems of knowledge scattered on the internet into viable web books.

As a tutor, you can use this technology in 2 ways:

  1. You can build web books for your own use as you research the web for information. You probably use a search engine to find information. You continue to the same except that when you find a good web page, you save it into your web book.
  2. You can build a custom web book knowing the specific requirements of your student. For example, if the student needs additional help on algebra but not on bar charts, then you can create a web book that contains the chapter on "algebra" and add links you find into the web book. We are quite sure your student would be mighty pleased with your service.
Here's a step-by-step example on how a tutor can build a personalized web book using Mashedge:

  1. If you have not already signed up, please do sign up since it is required to create web books.
  2. Click on "Create a Web Book". Enter title of the book - "Math Book for John J". Enter the subject and level for the book.
  3. Choose "private" option for the web book. This would enable only you to see the book. Later you can add John's email so that he can view the book.
  4. Disable "Community Edit" so that only you can add links to the web book.
  5. Add a title for Chapter 1, let's say 'Algebra'.
  6. If you need to add more chapters, click on 'Add More Chapters?' and you will get space to add another chapter.
  7. When you done entering this basic information, click on "Create". The shell of a web book is now created for you and you are led to the main page of the web book. Observe that the table of contents is displayed.
  8. Pick any chapter to begin adding content to the chapter. Simply add a URL and click on 'Add Web Page" and the URL is saved in the chapter.
  9. While you are at it, you can also add chapter summary that can help John.
Now, to enable John to view the book, go the main page of the web book. You will find a link to "Manage Private Book Users". Click on this and enter John's email address. You can decide if you want to allow to add content to the book or not. That's it.

When John logs in to his account using the email address you entered (and he needs to sign up too), he will be able to see the book you made for him in his "My favorites". He can browse the links you added for him.

With personalization to a web page level, Mashedge can help the tutor provide personalized teaching to the student and improve her value.

You can also see the white paper on Mashedge for Tutors for more information.

Step-By-Step Example: Mashedge For Teachers

Are you a teacher who uses the internet a lot to find information? Then Mashedge can help you be more productive.

Let's say you want to find information on the internet about the "Famous Inventions made by Kids". Normally, you would use a search engine to do your research and save the information somewhere on your computer.

Here's how to use Mashedge to do the same thing and yet be more productive.

  1. Create a web book titled 'Famous Inventions by Kids'
  2. Make the book "private" while you build the book. (This is the default option).
  3. Add chapter 1 title: Invention by under 10 years old.
  4. Add chapter 2 title: Invention by under 15 years old.
  5. Add chapter 3 title: Inventions by Kids in India
  6. Add chapter 4 title: Inventions by Kids in America
  7. And so on. Add how many ever chapters you want.
  8. Click on "Create" and the outline of the book is created for you. The table of contents is now displayed for you.
  9. Click on any chapter for which you want to add content. Now search the internet. When you find relevant content, cut and paste the URL of the website and click on "Add Web Page Link". That link now appears in the recommended content. Slowly as you add links, the book becomes better and better over time. Since you anyway search the web, the only additional step for the teacher is to cut and paste the link into the web book.
Now, to unleash the real power of Mashedge, a set of teachers can collaborate to build the web book. To enable this, click on the link "Manage Private Book Users" from the main page of the web book. You can now enter the email addresses of the teachers with whom you want to collaborate. When you do this, the other teacher gets instant access to the web book and can also add content that she discovers into the same book! Now you have multiple people working to build the book, each can see the content that the other person is adding, and can avoid duplicate work.

Once the book is built, you can grant read-only permissions to your students to browse through the book and allow them to see the websites you discover. If you want to share the book with the world, you can make the book "public" at that point in time.

And this is not all. Come next year, the teacher in charge of the subject can update the book. She does not have to start from scratch once again. She can simply update the books with new links and make the book current!

Mashedge allows teachers to provide better personalized learning experience to the students with very little additional work. At the same time, it allows the teacher to be more productive by collaborating with other teachers. It's a win-win for all - the teachers, students, and the school.

Step-By-Step Example: Mashedge for project teams

Here's an example on how a project team can use the Shared Private Web Book feature to improve team productivity.

Let's say the group project for an MBA team is to build the marketing strategy for a new product. Here's how Mashedge can help them in the information gathering phase of the project:

  • Group leader creates a private web book on Mashedge, and gives permission to each member of the group to access the private web book.
  • When each member of the group logs in, they can see the private web book in their "My Favorites" automatically,
  • Group leader creates chapters on various aspects of market research such as competitor info, market segmentation, pricing, advertising strategies, ad agencies etc. More chapters can be added as and when needed by any member of the group.
  • Each group member takes charge on one or two chapters and agrees to add links to the chapter when new information is found on the internet. This helps the member keep track of all the information in one place.
  • With this setup, all members of the group have instant access to all the information found on the internet by the entire team. The team does not do duplicate research and is more productive.
Once the team has completed its information gathering phase by using Mashedge, it can then use a document editor that supports collaboration (such as Google docs) to write the actual document.

New Feature: Sharing Private Web Books

We have put in a new feature that enables private web books to be shared with specific people. This feature is very useful for companies, professionals, and teams of people.

Companies can create private web books for their use internally as a learning tool to improve productivity. It also enables professionals such as financial consultants, recruiters etc to share huge amounts of information with their clients in a simple and efficient manner via Mashedge web books.

Even individuals can use this feature to do group projects. This feature will enable people in a group to divide up their online research work and at the same time, be aware of what the other group members are doing.

New Feature: Private Books

We have released a new feature on Mashedge that would allow users to create private web books. This would be perfect for those users who are creating web books but the web book is not ready for release to the general public. This will provide authors with a quiet place to build a quality web book.

You can enable this as follows: At the time you create a web book, you can check the option for "Private?". If checked, the web book would be accessible only to the author.

You can always change the book permissions at a future date by using the "Manage the Book" panel of the web book.

Web Book on Building a Website with Ruby on Rails

Ruby on Rails is quite popular for building web sites. I have built many enterprise quality servers in C, C++, Perl, and now Ruby on Rails. I can say with great confidence that Ruby on Rails is really a great choice for building server side applications. I have captured my learning on building a website with Ruby on Rails in this Mashedge Web Book titled Building a Website using Ruby on Rails. Check it out.

Beta Site Launched

We are pleased to launch the beta version of Mashedge.

Mashedge allows users to string together the gems of knowledge on the internet into viable web books.

Even though the search technology has advanced so much, people who are not tech savvy still find the internet intimidating. They type in a few keywords and they are shown large number of results. Children tend to get lost in the clutter of the internet. Busy professionals have no time to dig through the search results. Even internet savvy people can find the amount of information overwhelming.

Now, just imagine if you could browse the web like a book. Simply define the contents of the web book and let users add links to the websites they think is the best. The end result: you can get large amounts of information with one click in the familiar format of a book.

Mashedge offers this technology. We have a few featured books that highlight its potential:

  1. Singapore Math Curriculum: (Online Learning) Now use the Singapore math curriculum as the basis for browsing math websites. This will help students not get lost in the clutter of the internet.
  2. The financial crisis of 2008: (Current Events) Get a comprehensive picture about the financial crisis we all hate.
  3. Amazon Kindle: (Product Information) Know more about the Kindle before you buy. Find out the after sales issues experienced by other people.
  4. Barack Obama: (Politics) Get a comprehensive view of the new US president Barack Obama. Do you know where to find the his campaign promises? Well, now you can.
The possibilities are limitless. You can pretty much create a web book on any topic.

So, come on over, sign up and start contributing to Mashedge.
